英语中，”副”有很多单词或者前缀可以表示，但如果不正确的区分，可能造成笑话。可以译作“副”的主要词汇有：vice , deputy, associate, assistant。如何区分呢？
1.vice 为前缀或形容词, 意为“代理的、副的、次的”(acting for another ; acting nearest in authority ; holding rank next below”。该“副”称有职有权, 其用法多已约定俗成, 书写时, 多有连词符号。如:
Vice-president 副总统、副总裁、(法院或科学 院等) 副院长、(大学) 副校长 Vice-chairman 副主席、副会长、副委员长、副 主任
Vice-premier 副总理、副首相
Vice-minister 副部长
Vice-governor 副省长、副省主席、副州长、副总督
Vice-principal (中小学) 副校长

2.deputy 为名词或形容词, 意为“政府官员 的副手、代理人、代表; 副的、代理的”(a person appointed as a representative or substitute with power to act , a second2in2command or assistant who takes charges when his superior is absent) 。与vice 意义相近, 该“副”称也有职有权, 但是职务等级可能比vice要低一些，用法大多也已约定俗 成。比如:
deputy chairman 副主席、副议长、代理主席、 代理议长
Deputy Chief of the General Staff 副总参谋长
deputy secretary-general 副秘书长
deputy commissioner 副专员、副特 派员
deputy mayor 副 市长
deputy director 副主任、副所长

3.assistant 为名词或形容词, 意为“助理、助手;助理的、辅助的”(helper as in a job and is under that persons direction) 。表示技术等级或职业地 位, 侧重于“帮助某人, 并处于其指导之下”之 意。常见的有:
assistant 助教
library assistant 助理馆员
assistant professor 助理教授(位于副教授与讲 师之间)
assistant engineer 助理工程师
assistant manager 经理助理
assistant research fellow助理研究员
assistant 店员
4. associate 只作形容词用,意为“同伴的、同伙 的; 准的、副的”(closely connected as in function or office with another ; having secondary or subordinate status) 。与assistant 一样都表示技术等级或职业地 位,但侧重于“与某人共事”之意。常见的有:
associate professor 副教授
associate research fellow副研究员
associate research librarian 副研究馆员
associate librarian( = deputy librarian 或 sub – librarian) 副馆长
associate copy editor 副编审
