立春日禊亭偶成

律回岁晚冰霜少，春到人间草木知。

便觉眼前生意满，东风吹水绿参差。

IMPROMPTU LINES WRITTEN ON THE SPRING DAY

Warmth comes late in the year, ice and frost disappear;

When spring returns on earth, grass and woods feel the mirth.

Everything comes to life again before my eyes;

The east wind blows, I see green ripples fall and rise.

村居即事

绿遍山原白满川，子规声里雨如烟。

乡村四月闲人少，才了蚕桑又插田。

RURAL LIFE

All hills and fields are clad in green and streams in white;

Cuckoos shed tears while rain drizzles like vapor light.

The peasants in the fourth moon are busy farm hand;

Having just fed the silkworms, they should till the land.

A PLEASURE GARDEN IN EARLY SUMMER

Nursling ducks swim in pools deep here and shallow there;

Mume fruit is ripe, the weather now cloudy now fair.

I bring wine to drink in the garden east and west,

And strip the loquat of golden fruit without rest.

THE MOURNING DAY

There're many graveyards in northern and southern hill;

On Mourning Day the mourners come and weep their fill.

Burnt paper money flies as white as butterflies;

The bloodlike tears are shed and dye azaleas red.

At sunset foxes come back to lie there at night;

At home the mourners would laugh by the candlelight.

While he is alive, a man should in wine be drowned.

When dead, could he drink a drop of wine underground?

So deep in love, you shuttle between willow trees;

You twitter when you play with the loom as you please.

EARLY SPRING

On sunny branches two or three mumes begin to blow;

I like their fragrance and petals powdered with snow.

Pale in mist and silver in moonlight they stand;

They blush in water deep and smile on shallow sand.

She shivers with spring cold in her flower-sweetened dream,

Trimming the candle by taking off her hairpin,

She may anticipate I'm lodging at the inn.

VISITING A SMALL GARDEN IN LATE SPRING

Since the mume blossom takes off her rosy attire,

The crabapple has rouged her face as red as fire.

When rasphery fades, comes the end of flowers all;

Only the trailing plants appear over the mossy wall.

MUME BLOSSOMS

No dust has left the least stain on the pure mume flower;

She is content with bamboo fence and thatched bower.

But married by mistake to the poet of crane,

She is glorified in verse again and again.

RURAL SCENE AT DUSK

Green grass overgrows the shore of the brimming pool;

The sun pecked by hills sinks into ripples cool.

A cowherd comes back astride on a buffalo;

He blows on his short flute a tune he may not know.

梅雪争春未肯降，骚人阁笔费评章。

梅须逊雪三分白，雪却输梅一段香。

MUME AND SNOW

The mume blossoms and snow vie in announcing spring;

A poet knows not in whose praises he should sing.

The mume blossoms are not so white as winter snow;

In fragrance snow can't match mume blossoms when they blow.
